LinkedIn SSI score: what it measures and what to ignore

Abstract four bars of different heights in slate and black on an off-white background

Check your SSI once, then stop optimising it. The only part that pays for a founder is "build relationships", and that happens in your DMs. LinkedIn now says much the same thing itself.

Check your score here (free; sign in to LinkedIn). Then read on for what it measures and what to do with it.

What SSI measures

LinkedIn's Social Selling Index is "a metric from 0 to 100" covering four elements (LinkedIn SSI page). LinkedIn opened it to every member in August 2015 (LinkedIn Sales Blog).

The four elements of LinkedIn's SSI

Establish your professional brandA complete profile that says who you helpFind the right peopleLooking for and connecting with people who fitEngage with insightsSharing and commenting on useful materialBuild relationshipsReal conversations with the people you've found

Our plain-English summary of LinkedIn's four elements. The last box is highlighted because it's the one that leads to booked calls.

What a "good" score is

LinkedIn doesn't publish a "good" threshold. The score page shows how you rank against people in your industry and your network, and that comparison is the only benchmark LinkedIn provides. We won't invent a number for you to chase.

What LinkedIn now says about the score

On its current SSI page, LinkedIn writes that "a high SSI score doesn't always represent the efficacy of a sales person or correlate with measurable sales outcomes", and that "the time and effort needed for high SSI scores can distract people from closing deals" (LinkedIn SSI page). The page goes on to promote LinkedIn's own paid sales tools, so read it with that in mind. But on the score itself, it's an unusually frank admission: SSI measures activity on LinkedIn, not revenue.

You'll also see an older statistic about high-SSI reps being more likely to hit quota. It comes from 2014, was self-reported and shows correlation rather than cause. We've left it out.

Raising each element without gaming it

  • Brand: your headline should name who you help and with what. "Bookkeeping for UK design studios" beats "Helping businesses grow".
  • Find: invite people you have a reason to contact. LinkedIn's own advice is "fewer and more thoughtful invitations" (LinkedIn Help). Our connection limits guide covers what's official.
  • Engage: comment like a person who read the post. A useful sentence beats "Great insight!".
  • Relationships: reply to everyone waiting on you before you post anything.

Don't use tools that visit profiles, send invitations or post comments for you to push the number up. LinkedIn doesn't allow software that automates activity on its site (LinkedIn Help), and an inflated score books no calls.

Why conversations beat the score

The first three elements get you noticed. The fourth turns being noticed into a sale. If you have time for only one, spend it in your DMs: find the conversations that are warming up, reply to the ones waiting on you, and use a follow-up that adds a reason to reply. For the bigger picture, see our social selling guide and LinkedIn lead generation playbook.

Where DealGate fits

DealGate is built for the "build relationships" part. It shows who's warming up or waiting on your reply in your LinkedIn DMs and drafts your next message in your voice. Coming soon: replies auto-send within caps and pacing, with a safety pause if LinkedIn shows a warning. Pricing: $0.99 for your first month, then $29/mo founding price ($49/mo list).

FAQ

How do I get my LinkedIn SSI score?

Sign in to LinkedIn and go to linkedin.com/sales/ssi. LinkedIn made the score available to every member in August 2015, not only Sales Navigator users.

How can I check my LinkedIn SSI score for free?

The score page at linkedin.com/sales/ssi is free; you just need to be signed in to LinkedIn.

What does SSI mean?

Social Selling Index. It's a 0 to 100 score LinkedIn created to measure how a salesperson establishes a professional brand, finds the right people, engages with insights and builds relationships on LinkedIn.

How do I increase my SSI score?

Do the four things it measures, by hand: make your profile clear about who you help, look for people who fit your ideal customer profile, share and comment on useful material, and reply to and build real conversations. Don't use automation to inflate activity; it breaks LinkedIn's rules and doesn't produce buyers.

Does SSI affect reach?

LinkedIn doesn't say that it does. We haven't found a LinkedIn source linking SSI to how widely your posts are shown, so we wouldn't plan around it.
